A pair of Anglo-Japanese armchairs. In the style of E.W.Godwin attributed to James Shoolbred. A harmonious design, with subtle incised detail to the head rest, with repeated elliptical backs. And graduated interlacing arm design with refined turnings and incised detail. An exaggerated rake to all the legs with again incised detail to the front legs which start square at the top changing to turned towards the middle and 2 stretchers to each side with square section to the upper one yet turned and incised to the lower one an interplay with design elements between the two stretchers mirroring the front leg square and turned details, the first two images showing them after they have been professionally re-upholstered in a quality green leather. Height 75cm. Circa 1870's.
