During the final years of the 19th century Gillows of Lancaster ran into financial difficulty and from 1897 began a 'LOOSE' financial arrangement with Waring of Liverpool. Gillows and Warings both had stores in London’s Oxford Street and it is thought that the expiry of the formers lease also prompted the two firms joining together which was legally ratified by the establishment of Waring and Gillow in 1903. Also in 1897 Gillows absorbed arguably the most exceptional maker of the late Victorian period Collinson and Lock who made important furniture to the designs of E.W.Godwin the Godfather of the Modern Movement. Warings, Gillows and Collinson and Lock were three of the most important furniture makers in England in the 18th and 19th Century. These companies came together to form what turned out to be one of the highest quality furniture makers in the land drawing on a 160 years of experience from Gillows, 62 years of experience from Warings and 35 years of experience from Collinson and Lock all amalgamated into one company. It remained an independent firm until 1985. This sideboard is a historic work of art made at the very beginnings of the famous Waring and Gillows partnership.
