E W Godwin probably for William Watt. An Anglo-Japanese ebonized side chair

POA

Edward William Godwin, an Anglo-Japanese ebonized side chair, probably made by William Watt. With a lattice back, a later overstuffed leather seat on square part-fluted supports.

See Soros, Susan Weber ‘The Secular Furniture of E.W. Godwin’, p. 113, illus. 137 for a comparable example. See also Sotheby’s with Paul Reeves ‘The Best of British Design from the 19th-20th centuries: The Selling Exhibition’, 14th-20th March, 2008, PR33 for a comparable chair.

We have had this chair professionally re upholstered with embossed Gilded leather replicated exactly from the original leather designs Godwin designed for furniture for Lord Limerick at Dromore Castle in early 1870's.
