About this piece
E W Godwin attributed. A pair of Anglo-Japanese side chairs with semicircular style radiating sun burst details to the back. The design of these side chairs follow the dining chairs Godwin designed for Dromore Castle, Ireland for Lord Limerick. The back rest with upper and lower cross supports that are 'turned' cross supports, yet the semicircular radiating design is captured between 'square' cross supports, all equally spaced between the turned and square section of the upper back. The back legs are comparable, square and both with an upper ring turned and incised section to the design. Further grouping of incised line details to all the turned parts and slightly pyramid and ring turned finials show similarities to a number of designs by Godwin for Dromore furniture including other chairs, tea tables, settees and cabinet designs. The semi circular radiating spokes are reminiscent of other radiating arrangements on side chairs, lounge armchairs and settees he designed throughout his earlier career. See Elizabeth Aslin.
