Thomas Jeckyll for Barnard Bishop and Barnard. A monumental mid Victorian hand formed wrought and cast iron Pergola/Decorative Garden Structure

POA

A monumental mid Victorian hand formed wrought and cast iron Pergola/Decorative Garden Structure. A masterpiece in High Victorian design. The Pergola was built in the same Era as Paxton's Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition of 1851, Kew Gardens by Decimus Burton from the mid to later part of the 19th Century and Barnard, Bishop and Barnards Japanese Pavilion designed by Thomas Jeckyll for the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876 smaller scale but on a similar theme. A unique and beautiful "Work of Art" which I purchased in Argentina. Argentina was probably the richest country in the world in the late Victorian period and through into the 20th century due to the rich Silver mines and cattle exports and corn beef, with this wealth they came to Europe and bought some of the very best of what Europe had to offer and why some of the most amazing and most valuable Works of Art from Europe have turned up in Argentina. In Great Britain, France and Germany the industrial revolution was full steam ahead and thumping at an incrediable rate of knots, producing what was the height of Fashion, Design and Quality supplying the world with their wares. Even Argentina's architecture is a melody of European styles from Romanesque, to Gothic, Classical Renaissance, Baroque. The British supplied many of the trains and even some train stations, mirror images of our own great Victorian train stations which were shipped out complete and erected there. There are many beautiful Art Nouveau buildings in Argentina. We think the Pergola is probably French or British there are no markings on it at all, I am still researching it's origin but the date we feel is Circa 1850. Research in Argentina has shown that there was no-one in Argentina at that time who could have made this. It was removed from a large homestead house in Argentina, the house was built on a enourmous ranch in the early 1800's, it was pulled down in the 1970's and purchased by an old Rancher whom stored it in one of his barns until we purchased it. One can see in the 3rd row of images above we have had it finely bead blasted and it has had two coats of red oxide rust proof paint ready for the final colour of your choice. In the two rows of images below it's shown in it's original condition when we purchased it. An amazing garden structure that would add beauty, style, class and exquisite taste to any beautiful garden, the centre of attraction for entertaining, party's or family gatherings. What a good gardener could grow around and within it would be all one needs to compliment and enrich it's simplicity yet stunning presence. A Pergola is a garden resting place entwined with flowers. We can ship it anywhere in the world. It is 14 metres long (approx 46') x 6 metres 30cms high (approx 20'). Circa 1850.
